What are the leading causes of workplace injuries?

On Behalf of | Feb 7, 2022 | Worker's Compensation

There are many different working conditions in Massachusetts and some are more dangerous than others. Workers have different job requirements both physically and with what materials or equipment they need to use to complete their jobs. With the proper training and safety equipment most of the dangers at various jobs can be mitigated, but unfortunately those are not always followed and workplace accidents occur. Workers suffer injuries as a result of these accidents, which can be very detrimental to the worker both physically and financially.

Overexertion

There are many different ways that workers injure themselves or develop diseases, but some are more common than others. In most years the leading cause of workplace injuries has been overexertion or bodily reaction. This includes injuries that occur because of the physical demands of the job such as lifting and pulling heavy objects. It also includes repetitive motion injuries.

Slips, trips and falls

The second leading cause of workplace injuries is slips, trips and falls. These injuries can occur when people trip over objects on the ground or slip on hazardous substances that have not been properly cleaned up. It can also include falls from ladders, scaffolding, roofs and other high objects or falling from one floor to another during construction projects.

Contact with objects

The third leading cause in most years is contact with other objects. This includes being hit by trucks or other heavy machinery. It can also result from being caught in between two moving objects from a collapse or other reasons.

There are also many other ways that workers suffer injuries while on the job, such as exposure to electricity or other harmful chemicals. However, no matter how people suffer the injuries at work, for the most part injured workers may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits can pay for medical bills and a portion of the income workers lose as a result of the injury.

People in Massachusetts rely on their jobs to earn an income and provide for themselves and their families. If they are hurt and unable to work, it can be very difficult on them. That is why it is important that workers receive the workers’ compensation benefits they deserve. However, there are times when their claims may be initially denied by their employers. In these situations injured workers may need to appeal the denials in order to receive their benefits. These can be complicated matters and experienced attorneys may be able to guide one through the process.
